Hello Otterites and Happy Flag Day! June 14 is designated as Flag Day because the Continental Congress, on June 14, 1777, designated that the new American flag be alternating red and white stripes with white stars on a field of blue. It is not an official Federal holiday, but it is a national observance.

Starting in 1937, it became an official state holiday in Pennsylvania. June 14 is also considered the birthday of the US Army, as the Continental Congress created a national army on the date in 1775. Franklin Roosevelt tried to make it United Nations Day, but that didn’t last.

There are Flag Day parades and observances all over the US, and Snakes & Otters doesn’t want to be left out. We may have to organize a parade for next year. We can start taking applications for floats, balloons, marching bands and the like. Get some Shriners to drive some dune buggies around, all with the S&O logo. Would be an awesome Flag Day parade.

Anyway, quick post this week. Wilson the Wonder Doodle is keeping us busy. He’s a darn cute fluff ball, getting bigger every day. By the way, image above is a Flag Day poster from 1917. It is by an unknown author and is available from the United States Library of Congress’s Prints and Photographs division under the digital ID cph.3g06262. Public Domain.
