Good Morrow noble Otterites!

Sportsball time again. Robert may join me in discussing sports, but likely Francis will take a hard pass. He decidedly mixed his sports metaphors on a recent episode. Football, America’s number 1 spectator sport, is rapidly approaching and with it the season for fantasy football.

I’m sure you are familiar with fantasy sports, noble reader, as one would have to have been trapped in the Genesis cave by Khan Noonien Singh since about 1995 to not know about fantasy sports. Ol’ Martin here is a bit of an addict, having participated in some format or another since 1991, and running my own league since 1997. Commissioner, player, auctioneer, substitute drafter, you name it. Francis and Robert have participated back in the day, but life happens and they have moved to other pursuits.

The thing about fantasy sports is you can feel like you have all the knowledge, all the analytical skills, have the tiger by the tail, but there is a huge amount of luck that goes into it. A late season injury to a key player and a great team falls just short. Last season I was dominating a 12 teamer until Derrick Henry’s foot injury. There was nothing left on the waiver wire that late in the season, and a team that peaked and was healthy late slide in for the title.

The business of fantasy sports is monster as well. People pay big dough to get info leading into drafts and throughout the season. I usually do my own research without any pay info, but I get the idea behind having someone else pay attention throughout the offseason and pay for those insights. There used to be a ton of free info, including on industry giants like ESPN, but with big money comes big pay days for the personalities behind the stats, so most have moved this content behind pay walls. Still, dig around a little and there’s info to be had.

Anyway, have to run, have great seasons if you participate Otterites, and I’m off to study some PPR rankings for rookie wide outs.
