So, I was listening to our “Wolves Among Us” episode last week and while generally it was a stellar outing, I think we did have 1 oopsie that we should correct. I feel like we let Grand Admiral Karl Donitz off the hook a little on his dedication to Der Fuhrer.
Donitz had been a dedicated Nazi during the war, pushing Nazi doctrine through the navy after taking command from Erich Raeder. He was a committed anti-Semite and Hitler favorite. He was the primary committed Nazi at the end of the war after Goring and Himmler were written out of Hitler’s political testament for attempting to negotiate with the Allies. Donitz was arrested as head of the Flensburg Government by the Allies, and tried at Nuremburg. He was convicted of waging wars of aggression and crimes against the laws of war, and sentenced to 10 years. He escaped conviction on crimes against humanity. It was believed he knew about the Holocaust even though he had not attended the Wannsee Conference in which the “final solution” was planned.
In other words, just as scummy as the rest of the gang. Thought Hitler was a super genius.
Give a listen to our investigation of the Battle of the Atlantic and especially the role technology played in the Allied victory.
