Readers, listeners, it is Martin Monday and I wanted to bring you a little bonus content. My thing seems to be these “today in history” posts, so let’s go with that.
Today in 1963, a television landmark premiered. The first episode of Doctor Who premiered on the BBC. Intended as a family science fiction show that would allow writers to explore scientific themes, the show would run through 1989 in its first incarnation. A great gimmick wherein the character would go through “regeneration” when hurt allowed the producers to switch to different actors and refresh the character.
The show was then reborn in 2005. Because of the device of the TARDIS, the Doctor’s ship, all of history and the future and the universe can be the canvas for the show. The series are usually great adventures with a sense of humor.
Now I’m not a big Whovian, just in passing really, but I have it on good authority that both Francis and Robert are major Whovians and could probably write a 5000 word post each on what’s great about Doctor Who. It is that much of a pop culture phenomenon, and should certainly be added to our schedule for a podcast episode.
